Plastic Commodity (24)Pittsburgh – Sept. 11, 2008 – Bayer MaterialScience LLC recently introduced its proven family of Blendur® polyurethane resin systems to the North American market at the COMPOSITESWORLD Expo, held Sept. 3-5 in the Renaissance Schaumburg Hotel and Convention Center, Schaumburg, Ill.
High glass transition temperatures combined with low smoke and fire spread ratings have proved Blendur® resin systems particularly well-suited for high-heat applications in the European aerospace, automotive, rail and electrical markets since the 1970s. Blendur® resin systems are marketed under BaySystems™, the umbrella brand for the global polyurethane systems operations of Bayer MaterialScience.
Versatile Blendur® resin systems can be custom formulated to meet the precise requirements of the most demanding composite applications. The one- and two-component systems can be made with viscosities ranging from 30 to 2,500 mPas, and with pot life and gel times between 10 minutes and six hours. The Blendur® resin system can even be made to react at room temperature.
This flexibility enables a molder to take full advantage of a Blendur® resin system’s combination of unique properties, including:
Low thermal expansion Chemical and hydrolysis resistance High glass transition temperature of approximately 280◦C High heat resistance up to approximately 240◦C High long-term thermal stability at over 200◦C Excellent mechanical and electrical properties up to approximately 200◦CComposite materials made from Blendur® resin systems also have good inherent fire performance properties that can be improved even further by adding flame retardants.
Another advantage is that a Blendur® resin system can be produced using common thermoset manufacturing processes such as resin transfer molding, vacuum-assisted resin infusion, filament-winding, pultrusion, prepreg manufacture, mold construction, casting and injection molding.
“The Blendur® system provides a wealth of possibilities for producing composite parts that offer an excellent combination of properties in the high-temperature range, yet can be processed with existing manufacturing equipment and standard processing technologies,” said Craig Snyder, market channel representative, Bayer MaterialScience LLC. “We are pleased to harness our global resources to make these tried and true Blendur® resin systems available to the North American market,” added Snyder.
Effective March 1, 2007, Bayer MaterialScience has combined its entire global polyurethane systems business under the umbrella brand of BaySystems™. This change affects not only existing product brands in this segment – including Blendur® – but also the global network of polyurethane systems houses.
